In the theater, an epilogue is a short speech, sometimes in verse, that is spoken directly to the audience at the end of a play. In classical drama, the character who makes this concluding speech is called Epilogue. Likewise, a prologue is short speech, sometimes in verse, that is spoken directly to the audience at the beginning of a play. A prologue sets up the play, an epilogue sums it up. Epilogue is also (and more commonly) used outside the theater.
