Existing ghc i/o library is hard to extend, closely coupled with ghc rts, can't be ported to other haskell compilers. it will be great to detach new i/o library, based on code of current ghc i/o, streams, SSC, network-alt, fps, filepath and other libs. detailed explanation at  http://haskell.org/haskellwiki/Library/IO
